Professionalism...
Customer questions, concerns, and helpful information:
- The most efficient way to determine the professionalism of a contractor is to ask a specific question!
For example: How soon can you begin to paint or stain after you have power washed my home? How soon after a heavy day of rain?
You will get a variety of answers but there is only one correct answer!
Coating can only begin once the interior moisture level in the siding, trim, deck is below 12% moisture content otherwise peeling will begin in 1-2 years. Random testing must be done with an electronic moisture meter. If you don’t get that answer then move on! The cost of painting your home is about to go up dramatically because the job will only last 1-2 years. Worse, the next repaint will be even more expensive because preparation time will be significantly greater.
- Look for a contractor who employs year round painters and does permanent advertising year round.
- Look for contractors who provide full service carpentry so that just one contractor is doing all repair and repaint work.
- A small 1-3 person business is more likely to need work and could be more likely to paint when conditions do not meet the 12% moisture standard.
Larger companies that also do carpentry, remodeling, etc. have more places to work and assign workers; they do not have to “rush the process” in painting your home. They can comply with the scientific standards regarding when to begin the work.
