Helpful Information...
What causes exterior paint or stain to fail!
- Over a period of years exposure to UV rays, rain, and overall weather will result in fading and eventually peeling or loss of bonding.
- Premature peeling (1-2yrs) occurs when painting or staining is done when there is more than 12% interior moisture within the wood siding and trim on your home. Once trapped by a new coating the sun will draw this moisture forward until it is beneath the new coating where it will quickly eliminate the bond between the coating and the wood.
Other things you may want to know:
- The true cost of your paint job is determined by how long the job lasts. For example, a job of $4,000 price lasting only 4 years = $1,000 per year. A job of $6,000 price lasting 8 years= $750 per year.
- The best way to anticipate longevity of work is to meet with painting contractors, critique their knowledge of products, techniques and how to prevent premature paint failure and check their references!!
Credible contractors should be anxious to meet with you, answer all your questions and willingly offer to provide you a comprehensive reference package.
